Pyramid Lake Fishing

A little over a week ago, Jonathan and I took a trip to Pyramid Lake in Nevada. The lake is on a Paiute Indian reservation, so you have to get permits from them to fish. We were fishing for Lahontan cutthroat trout, which are quite a bit larger than a stocked rainbow trout.

On the 395 on the way up on Friday.

Jonathan caught this fish early on Saturday morning. The temperature was probably in the mid 30s here. It didn't get much warmer than that until Monday.

This picture is from Saturday afternoon. I had only caught one or two fish up to this point, but then I caught five or six straight during the afternoon at this spot. I ended up with 7 fish on Saturday. Jonathan had 9.

This fish was around 22 inches. You are only allowed to keep two fish between 17 and 20 inches, or above 24 inches. Most of our fish were between 20 and 24 inches. Go figure.

This is the rock that Pyramid Lake get its name from. If you can't tell, the rock is shaped like a pyramid.

Sunday was really windy, and the fishing was slower, but Jonathan did catch 4, and I caught 2.

On Monday morning it started off windy with huge waves, so we went behind a rock formation where it was calm. Here's a pretty cool shot of Jonathan landing a fish.

I caught seven straight fish during the morning. Jonathan caught two. I'm not sure what I was doing differently, but the other guy we were with didn't catch anything. It was actually kinda funny.

This is what is known as overeating. Jonathan caught this fish that was already eating a Tui chub. Apparently it was still hungry. The Tui chub is actually about the size of the fish I normally am fishing for.

On Monday afternoon, it started to get really calm, so we got our float tubes out again.

Here is Jonathan with one of the many fish he caught out there.

Catching fish from a float tube is actually a lot more fun than from the shore. These fish were big enough to pull us around a bit.

Jonathan is holding up a fish in the foreground, and I'm fishing in the background.

The lake was like glass at this point, it was really quiet out, and the sunset was spectacular. Being out in a float tube like was that amazing. I caught 16 fish on Monday, but I think this was the highlight of the day.

Overall the trip was a complete blast. Jonathan ended up with 27 fish, while I had 25. We caught way more fish than I was expecting, which in turn, made the whole trip more fun.

November fishing and camping

A few weeks back, the guys in our family (along with Jonathan and Daniel M), took a trip up to the Kern river.

Jonathan caught a nice sized trout.

Kyle catching a fish...

... and this popped put. Have you ever seen a more disgusting fish? Yeah, Kyle got carped.

Timothy holding up Jonathan's fish. He actually set the hook, so it was part his.

It was very pleasant to sit next to the river even while the fish weren't biting.

Paul caught a trout.

Timothy fishing.

I didn't get carped! Getting carped is worse than getting skunked. It is when you only catch carp, and no real fish.

A scenic shot.

Philip fishing.

Kyle, a few friends, and I went camping in the desert this last weekend. We mainly wanted to explore some mines, so we ended up spending most of our time underground.

Richard, Caleb and Kyle inside one of the mines.

It was kinda dark down there.

The rails coming out of the mine are showing their age here.

Mom, if you see this, we didn't go down there. At least, I don't think so.

Scenic shot.

"See the light from this flashlight? I think that is where Stephen parked his Jeep."

This is what most of the mine entrances looked like.

Posing for an epic shot. eh, Jason... pink is NOT epic.

Some machinery outside of the mines.

It was cold out so we made a nice big fire. It got so hot in our camp that I had to take off my jacket.

Some of the water in my water bottle was frozen in the morning.

We had eggs and hot dogs for breakfast.

The last daft mine explorers who came here must not have fared very well...

Words of wisdom... never drive an old looking car out into the desert. Somebody might think you are a target, and start start shooting at you.

The opening of a mine.

A scenic shot.

"Who wants to jump down the big black hole first?"

A passageway in a mine.

Richard climbing down to a lower level. We found some pretty cool spots.

A big room down in the mine. I think Stephen is checking it for a future home.

We found two sticks of dynamite with the original instructions. We thought it would be fun to blow up the car, but we gave way to better judgement. Just so you know, I voted for blowing up the car.

Caleb posting with the Hercules Powder instructions.

This bridge goes over a very deep hole with another maze of passageways, but there was no good way of getting down there. We should had to peak through the cracks.

In the main mine we went in there was a shaft with a ladder that went really far down.

After about five minutes of climbing down, we still couldn't see the bottom.

Definitely the longest ladder I've ever climbed.

A big room we found at the bottom.

That actually looks kinda scary.

We were at this mine at dusk. The mine went really far back in a straight tunnel. For a few minutes, the sun shone directly in and it looked very spectacular.

It was hard to catch on camera, but it was very cool.

After a few minutes the sun went down and it was all dark again.
